What Risk Factors Make a Job Dangerous?
Some risk factors are obvious, such as the threat of violence to policemen and security guards, working in a hazardous environment that electrical workers, firemen or tradesmen find themselves in, or working with hazardous materials like chemists, miners or chemical plant workers do. Other less obvious factors include things like time spent travelling on the road. Statistically, a large portion of fatalities occur on the road due to car accidents. It is therefore a basic assumption that if you are a travelling sales person or truck driver, your risk increases. If you travel frequently to foreign countries, there are several factors that increase your risk. U.S. citizens are often targets for terrorist attacks and kidnappings, especially in areas such as South America and the Middle East. In addition, there is the risk associated with flying, using public transport and driving in a foreign country. Working long or irregular hours will affect your alertness and ability to react in a situation and is therefore also considered a high-risk factor. If you handle valuable goods such as jewelry or if people think that that you may have large amounts of cash on your person, you could also become a target; therefore, these things increase your risk.
What are considered Dangerous Jobs?
At the top of the list of people with dangerous jobs are fishermen. This is because they are at sea for weeks and months at a time and there is a high risk of injury working in such a remote and hazardous environment. Right behind fishermen in terms of risk are truck drivers. Not only do they spend more time than most on the roads, they also drive for very long periods of time and often continue on when fatigued, thereby increasing the risk of being involved in an accident. While pilots are highly skilled professionals, they are still considered to have a dangerous profession. This is because of the many hours spent flying, unpredictable weather patterns, and possible external mechanical or system errors that can occur on an aircraft as well as the possibility of human error. Construction workers, iron workers and loggers all work in dangerous and hazardous environments. Involvement with heavy machinery, working at heights, and risk of objects or workers falling are all a reality in such a work environment. Firemen and policemen consistently place themselves in danger in their line of duty. Even a supermarket cashier or jewelry store clerk has a risky profession because they handle valuable goods and volumes of cash.
How Does More Extensive Insurance Help?
While insurance companies may seem to want to help you, at the end of the day they are still a business. Insuring someone who is an exceedingly high risk will stretch the resources of the company. If a claim arises and the amount paid out is very large, it could affect the financial health of the insurance company. This is why some professions are difficult to insure; companies simply do not want to put themselves at undue risk. There are some insurance companies, however, that specialize in high-risk insurance. These policies look at specific risks associated with a profession and what level of coverage can be provided. It may be coverage for specific industries or types of risk. If you are involved in what is considered to be a high-risk profession and feel that your standard insurance policy does not provide adequate coverage, it’d be a good idea to look into a specialized insurance policy. If you rely on your physical ability to do your job, consider how you can protect your income if you are unable to work for a period of time due to injury. For any high-risk type job, it’s essential to ensure that you have adequate and extensive insurance coverage.
