Private healthcare market criticised over lack of competition
Posted on December 9th, 2011
Patients receiving treatment via private healthcare are not being given enough information about the costs and quality of different consultants because of a lack of competition in the market, according to the Office of Fair Trading.
The consumer watchdog has provisionally decided to refer the £5bn private healthcare market to the Competition Commission for investigation.
As well as a lack of easily comparable information on the quality and costs of private healthcare services, it also concluded that competition is being hampered by a lack of providers.
Just five providers – General Healthcare Group, Nuffield Health Hospitals, Ramsay Health Care UK, Spire Healthcare and HCA – account for more than three-quarters of the private healthcare market. In s

The Perils of Burst Water Pipes
Posted on November 26th, 2011
Last year, damage caused to homes from burst water pipes and burst water tanks cost our members an average of £9,500 each. As a result, UIA’s Claims Manager, Angela Devon has urged homeowners to take the relevant precautions to avoid such a problem.
Burst water pipes are a common problem in winter, making up a large proportion of home insurance claims but homeowners can avoid it by taking some simple precautions.
• Make sure that you know where your stop tap is and check that you are able to turn it off (test it before winter comes)
• Turn the thermostat down to around 15C, this will help to ensure that in the event of freezing conditions the heating will come on at a low temperature and stop trapped water from freezing and possible splitting pipes due to the expansion of water when it freezes
• If you are going away for an extended period, you may wish to drain down your plumbing and heating system but we would suggest that you take professional advice

Motorists warned to caution when approaching low level bridges

Drivers need to be highly alert and vigilant when driving in rainy weather, especially when approaching low level bridges that might be there no more
People have been warned to avoid low-lying bridges that may be flooded after Tuesday nights heavy storms in parts of the Gauteng province.
Emergency personnel were called to one flooded bridge in Sunninghill where a car was stuck in the water.
It was removed by a tow-truck before they arrived on the scene.
Emergency Services Synock Matobako said motorists must not take chances.
“If those roads are closed, they should use alternative roads because there could be problems if they try to drive through low-lying bridges,” he added.

West Virginia Insurers Seeing Positive Results from 2005 Law
Posted on November 21st, 2011
West Virginia auto insurers saw their underlying costs slashed by about $200 million in the five years after the state passed legislation preventing some injured parties from suing after a vehicle accident, according to a new report from the Insurance Research Council (IRC).
The Third-Party Bad Faith Act, which took effect in 2005, eliminated the right of third parties to file lawsuits against another person’s insurer when the claimant felt the insurer had failed to fairly settle their claim.
Instead, the legislation replaced the litigation route with an administrative process by which claimants could file complaints with the state insurance commissioner, who was authorized to investigate and impose fines and penalties on insurers found to have violated state business laws.
The insurance commissioner was given authority to award economic damages and up to $10,000 in other damages to third parties, in part from a trust fund established by increased insurer examination fees, according to the Independent Insurance Agents of West Virginia. <
